While taking his lunch break in Hull, Ian Shields, a valued member of our Courier Services team, noticed a man sitting alone on a bench…
Little did Ian know, the man was struggling deeply and contemplating taking his own life on the anniversary of his father’s death. Despite not being aware of the man’s personal struggles, Ian approached him with his trademark friendliness and warmth, engaging him in a conversation about rugby, work, and other everyday topics. This simple yet compassionate act gave the man a much-needed sense of normality and human connection.
To Ian’s surprise, the man later reached out to EMED Group to express his gratitude, crediting their conversation with helping him through an extremely dark moment. Sharon Lawes, Operations Manager of Courier Services, commended Ian’s actions, emphasising that his natural demeanour and lovely interpersonal skills played a crucial role in supporting the man during his time of need: “At no point did Ian know of the gentleman’s struggles, and I think because of this, as well as his natural demeanour and lovely interpersonal skills perhaps helped bring him back to reality.”
